Marshall's tight mountainside lots complicate everything a traditional chimney needs — vertical run, roof access, and reliable draft. The French Broad gorge adds its own trouble: cool, damp evening air and terrain that makes open flues temperamental. A direct-vent unit sidesteps the whole fight, venting horizontally through an exterior wall with sealed combustion that doesn't care what the gorge air is doing. For the revitalized downtown buildings — narrow, multi-story, built against rock — it's often the only sensible way to put fire in a guest-facing space at all, and it's equally at home in a hillside cabin above town.

Marshall is mixed-fuel territory — some properties on gas service, many on propane — and the appliance follows the fuel.
