What is the best firewood to burn in a fireplace or wood stove?
The best firewood is well-seasoned hardwood — oak, hickory, ash, hard maple, or black locust — dried a year or more to below about 20% moisture. Dense hardwoods carry more heat per log and burn longer and cleaner than softwoods. In Western North Carolina that usually means split oak and locust, seasoned since the previous spring.
Why seasoned hardwood wins
Two things make firewood good: density and dryness. Dense hardwoods pack more wood fiber into every split, so they hold more BTUs and burn far longer than a lightweight softwood. Low moisture means the fire spends its energy heating your room instead of boiling water out of the log.
Burn dry, dense wood and you get a hot, steady fire that coals well and leaves less creosote in your flue. Burn wet wood and even the best oak smokes, hisses, and gums up your chimney.

We're lucky in the mountains — oak, hickory, black locust, ash, and maple are all abundant, and they're all top-tier firewood. Locust and white oak are the overnight champions; ash and maple light a little easier and still throw serious heat.
Whatever you cut or buy, split it, stack it off the ground, and give it time. Oak in particular wants a year and a half to two years to fully season; rush it and you lose most of what makes it great.
