What is the best wall-mounted electric fireplace?

The Dimplex IgniteXL Bold 50 — a 50-inch linear unit built for wall-mounting or full recessing, with the most convincing electric flame on the market, about 5,000 BTU of supplemental heat, and a flame-only mode for summer evenings. It's the electric fireplace we put our name behind, and it hangs on virtually any interior wall with a nearby outlet.

Why this is the one we carry

We're a gas and wood house at heart, so the electric unit in our lineup had to justify itself on the flame — and Dimplex's IgniteXL Bold 50 does. At 50 inches of linear fire it reads like a high-end gas fireplace from the couch, and the flame-only summer mode means it earns wall space year-round, not just in January. Heat-wise it delivers roughly 5,000 BTU, about 1,500 watts — genuine supplemental warmth for a room up to around 400 square feet.

Surface-mount or recess it?

You have two ways to put it on the wall. Surface-mounting hangs it like a television — a few inches proud of the drywall, near an outlet, done in an afternoon. Recessing frames a pocket into the wall so the unit sits flush, which is the built-in, design-magazine look most people are picturing; it involves opening the wall, so it pairs naturally with a remodel or a new build. Either way there's no venting, no gas line, and no chimney — which is exactly why electric is the easiest fireplace category to add to a finished room.

Planning a TV above it? Electric runs far cooler than gas, which is why it's a favorite under screens — just honor the manufacturer's clearances and mounting heights.

Set expectations before you fall for the photo

Two honest caveats. First, 5,000 BTU is zone heat — it warms the room you're in, not the floor you're on. Second, when the power goes out — and Helene taught all of Western North Carolina how long that can last — an electric fireplace goes dark with everything else. If that trade-off suits the room, this is a terrific fireplace. See it burning at our Asheville showroom, or call (828) 545-0525 for a free assessment of your wall.
