What is whitewashing a brick fireplace?
Whitewashing is painting brick with watered-down white or off-white paint — usually latex thinned roughly half-and-half with water — so it soaks in and lets some of the brick's texture and color show through instead of fully coating it. The result is soft and translucent: brighter than raw brick, but not the solid, opaque look of full paint. It's a lighter-touch update that keeps the brick's character.
How the look is achieved
You thin your paint with water until it's more of a wash than a coat, then work it into the brick and often wipe some back off with a rag before it sets. Because the pigment is diluted, the brick's natural variation reads through — some bricks grab more, some less — so you get a lived-in, uneven, brightened surface rather than a flat monochrome. You control the effect entirely by how thin you mix it and how much you wipe: heavier for near-white, lighter for a sun-faded hint.
Whitewash vs solid paint
The difference is coverage and reversibility of intent. Solid paint hides the brick completely and gives you a clean, modern, uniform surface. Whitewash softens and lightens while keeping the masonry legible — it's the choice when you want brighter without erasing the fireplace's texture. Fair warning that applies to both: once thinned paint soaks into porous brick, it's still paint down in the pores, so whitewash isn't meaningfully easier to remove later than a full coat.
