What's the best fireplace option for a home without a natural gas line?
Asheville has more natural-gas coverage than anywhere else we serve, but “much of the city” is not all of it — and if your street missed the main, you’ve lost almost nothing. A sealed propane fireplace gives up nothing to the gas-main version, wood needs no fuel line at all, and where the main runs close, a licensed extension can still put you on it.
Off the main in a gas-main city
The first thing we check on an Asheville assessment is whether you’re really without gas — the mains cover much of the city, and if one runs near your street, extending it is exactly the kind of licensed, permitted, pressure-tested work we do week in and week out. If the main is genuinely out of reach, propane steps in without drama: a tank sited on your property, a regulator and piping we install and test ourselves, and nearly any gas fireplace in our lineup running on LP with the correct factory setup for the fuel.
What the housing stock wants
Montford and North Asheville homes often hold original masonry fireplaces that were warming rooms before the gas grid existed — a wood-burning insert with a correctly sized liner turns one into a genuine heater with zero fuel infrastructure, and it keeps working when the power doesn’t. Newer South Asheville construction points the other way: a clean-face direct-vent unit venting out a sidewall, run on propane if the main isn’t there. With nighttime temperatures in the 20s into early spring at our elevation, either choice earns its keep for a long season.
