What's the best fix for a wood-burning fireplace that smokes into the room?
Black Mountain's smoke problem has a time of day: Swannanoa Valley inversions leave mornings 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville, so the column of cold air sitting in your chimney at first light is heavier and more stubborn here than almost anywhere we work. Warm the flue before you light; if it still smokes, the chimney itself needs attention.
First light is the hard part
On clear nights the Swannanoa Valley traps a pool of cold air, and by morning your chimney is full of it — a dense, sinking column the first fire of the day has to push out before smoke can go anywhere but into the room. Give the flue a few minutes of small flame before loading the real fire, and don't judge the chimney by its 7 a.m. behavior alone. Frost also holds on later here than in Asheville, so this morning fight lasts deep into spring.
Montreat adds its own wrinkle: heavily wooded lots keep houses shaded, cool, and damp, and trees standing above the roofline churn wind into downdrafts on gusty days. The same shade that cools the house keeps stacked firewood from ever drying properly — and damp wood smokes no matter how well the chimney draws. Caps and screens up there deserve a look too; shade and moisture are hard on them.
The fifteen-minute fix
If the smoking survives a warmed flue and dry wood, the chimney needs eyes on it — damper, crown, creosote, liner condition, and how the termination sits relative to your roof and those trees. Black Mountain is 15 minutes east of our showroom at 629 Emma Rd, the permit goes through Buncombe County, and because the town sits on natural-gas mains you have both endings available: a sealed EPA wood insert or a direct-vent gas unit, either of which closes the smoke path for good. We'll tell you plainly if all you need is a sweep — the sealed insert is the cure for a fireplace that has always smoked, not the default prescription. Call (828) 545-0525.
