What's the best way to convert a wood-burning fireplace to gas?

Those original masonry fireboxes were built when heat was cheap and nobody counted what went up the chimney — and downtown Weaverville has plenty of candidates. An insert conversion keeps the hearth and fixes the physics: sealed unit in the existing opening, correctly sized liner up the old flue, and a fireplace that heats instead of decorating. In a north-facing valley where spring warm-ups lag Asheville's, that converted hearth stays useful well past the point most of Buncombe County has shut theirs down.
In a newer build off Reems Creek?
Newer construction changes the questions. Some of these homes came with wood-burning units that convert cleanly; others have fireboxes that are better replaced than converted, and we'll tell you which you have before anyone spends money — we'd rather set you up with the right appliance than the most expensive one. If the structure checks out and what you want is flame rather than heat, a vented gas log set is the simpler, lower-cost path, with the honest caveat that vented logs are ambiance and most of their warmth leaves through the flue.
