What's the difference between cast iron, steel, and soapstone wood stoves in how they hold and release heat?
The difference is thermal mass — how fast each material heats up and how long it keeps radiating after the fire burns down. Steel heats up fastest and cools fastest. Cast iron warms a little slower and radiates a bit longer. Soapstone is the slowest to come up to temperature but holds and releases gentle heat for hours after the coals die. None of the three burns wood more efficiently — that's the firebox design, not the metal.
Steel: quick heat, quick cool
A welded steel stove has thin walls and low thermal mass, so it comes up to temperature fast and starts throwing heat within minutes of a good fire. The tradeoff is that it cools just as quickly once the fire dies — a steel stove chills down a couple hours after the last coals. Cast iron: the steady middle
Cast iron has more mass than steel, so it warms a touch slower but radiates longer and more evenly after the fire tapers. It's also the traditional look — the ornate castings, the enameled colors. Soapstone: slow and long
Soapstone is the thermal battery of the group. It takes the longest to heat up — you won't feel much for the first half hour — but once it's charged it puts out a soft, even warmth for hours after the fire is out, which is why people love it for overnight burns and cabins. We install and service HearthStone, a soapstone line. It's heavier and costs more, and it's overkill if you only burn a fire for an evening.
One thing worth saying plainly: efficiency and clean burning come from EPA-certified firebox design, secondary combustion, and dry wood — not from which metal the stove is made of. The material governs how the heat feels over time, not how much fuel you burn.
