What's the difference between single-wall and double-wall stove pipe?

Single-wall stove pipe is one layer of steel — it radiates extra heat into the room but needs large clearances to combustibles, typically around 18 inches. Double-wall pipe has an insulating air gap between two walls, so it stays cooler on the outside, keeps the exhaust hotter for stronger draft, and can sit much closer to walls. Both connect a stove to the chimney.

Two ways to connect a stove

The pipe running from the back or top of a wood or gas stove up to the chimney is the connector pipe, and it comes two ways. Single-wall is exactly that: one thickness of steel. Double-wall wraps a second wall around it with an air gap between.

Both do the same basic job — get the exhaust from the stove into the chimney — but they behave very differently in the room, and which one you need usually comes down to space.

The clearance-versus-radiant-heat tradeoff

Single-wall pipe runs hot on the outside, so it throws off extra radiant heat — a plus in a big open room — but that heat means it has to stay far from anything that can burn, generally around 18 inches to combustibles.

Double-wall pipe keeps its outer surface much cooler, so it can be installed roughly 6 inches from a wall, which is often the only way to make a stove fit a tight corner or a small mountain cabin. The insulation also keeps the flue gases hotter, which improves draft and cuts creosote buildup.

Connector pipe isn't chimney pipe

One thing we make sure homeowners understand: stove pipe connects the stove to the chimney — it is not the chimney itself. Where the venting passes through a wall, ceiling, or roof, it transitions to listed Class A insulated chimney pipe, which is a different, rated product.
