Two numbers decide the pipe: how much gas the fire pit burns and how far the line runs. A modest fire bowl a few feet from the meter draws little and can run on a smaller line. A big 60,000-BTU-plus fire pit at the far end of the yard is another story — gas pressure drops the farther it travels, so a long run to a hungry burner needs a larger-diameter pipe to keep the flame full. There's no one-size answer; it's a calculation.
