What stops gas from leaking out if the pilot light blows out?

A flame-sensing safety called a thermocouple — a small metal probe that sits in the pilot flame and generates a tiny electric current only while it's hot. That current is what physically holds the gas valve open. If the flame dies, the probe cools within seconds and the valve snaps shut on its own. Newer electronic-ignition fireplaces do the same job with a flame-sensing electrode.

The thermocouple, in plain English

Think of it as a dead-man's switch for gas. The valve inside your fireplace is spring-loaded shut — its natural state is closed. The only thing overriding that spring is the few millivolts of electricity the thermocouple makes while it's sitting in a healthy pilot flame. Blow the pilot out, and there's nothing left holding the valve open; the spring wins and gas stops. It's a design that fails safe: any failure — dead flame, corroded sensor, broken wire — ends with the gas off, not on.

How electronic-ignition fireplaces handle it

Most newer units, including the IntelliFire systems on our Heat & Glo, Heatilator, and Majestic models, skip the standing pilot and spark the flame on demand. Same principle, faster reflexes: an electrode confirms the flame electrically, and if ignition isn't proven within a few seconds, the control board closes the valve and locks the system out until you reset it. It will not sit there pumping gas into the firebox hoping a spark eventually catches.

What this safety can't see — and what covers the rest

The thermocouple guards one thing: the gas passing through the appliance's own valve. It knows nothing about the piping upstream — the line running through your crawlspace or out to the propane tank. That's why the other half of the safety picture is how the line was built in the first place: in North Carolina, gas piping is licensed work, and we pressure-test and permit every line we run, with the county inspector signing off.
