Asheville rides natural-gas mains through much of town, so the units worth your time are the direct-vent and linear gas models — a Napoleon Ascent, a Heat & Glo linear, or a Valor if you want heat that still works with the power out.

Two Ashevilles, two different fireplaces

Older Montford and North Asheville homes usually have original masonry fireplaces — handsome but drafty, often running a net heat loss. A sealed gas insert dropped into that existing opening turns it back into a real heater without touching the mantel or brick you love.

Newer South Asheville construction leans the opposite way — clean-face linear gas and modern wood designs built for open great rooms. Seeing a traditional log set and a linear ribbon burning side by side is the fastest way to know which one is you.
