Why are ventless fireplaces described as 99% efficient?
Because a ventless fireplace has no chimney or vent pipe for heat to escape through, so nearly every BTU the burner makes stays in the room instead of going outdoors. That's where the 99% figure comes from — it's real physics, not marketing. The tradeoff: the moisture and combustion byproducts stay in the room too.
The number is real — it's how efficiency is measured
Efficiency just measures how much of the fuel's energy becomes usable room heat versus how much leaves the house. A vented fireplace sends a chunk of its heat outside by design — that's the price of venting exhaust. A vent-free unit has nowhere for that heat to go but into your living space, so the fuel-to-heat number climbs toward the top. So on paper, ventless wins the efficiency column outright. But efficiency and 'the right choice' aren't the same thing, and the fine print is where the honest conversation happens.
What the 99% conveniently leaves out
Everything that would have gone up a flue — including water vapor and combustion byproducts — now stays in the room. That means added indoor humidity, an oxygen-depletion sensor (ODS) that shuts the unit off if oxygen levels in the room drop, and firm Btu limits tied to room size. When efficiency should drive your decision — and when it shouldn't
