Why do wood stove BTU ratings vary so much between brands?
Because there's no single standardized test everyone uses. Some brands publish a maximum lab BTU burned with softwood or in a short high-fire test, while others quote a realistic sustained output with seasoned hardwood. Fuel type, moisture, load size, and whether the number is input or output all move the figure — so a 55,000 BTU stove from two makers can heat very differently.
Two 'maximum' numbers, two different tests
The BTU figure on a wood stove spec sheet isn't produced by one universal test. EPA emissions certification burns a specific cordwood crib to measure grams-per-hour and efficiency — but the BTU number in the brochure often comes from a separate lab burn, sometimes a short, wide-open high-fire nobody actually runs all evening. One brand prints that peak burst; another prints a realistic sustained output. Same stove class, wildly different headline number.
Input, output, and the fuel in your firebox
There's also the input-versus-output gap. Input is the energy in the wood you load; output is the heat that actually reaches the room after efficiency losses. A stove that's 78% efficient turns far more of its fuel into usable heat than an old 50% smoke-dragon, so two stoves quoting identical BTU can warm a room very differently.
Fuel does the rest. Seasoned hardwood like oak carries far more energy per load than softwood or green wood, and moisture is the silent thief — wet wood spends its first BTUs just boiling off water before it ever heats you. A lab's perfect test fuel rarely matches what's stacked by your door up a mountain road.
How to compare stoves honestly
Ignore the hero number and read the whole sheet together: EPA efficiency percentage, grams-per-hour emissions, firebox cubic feet, and the 'heats up to X square feet' rating tell you far more than a lone BTU.
