Why does my fireplace smell musty in the summer?
A musty summer smell almost always comes from moisture meeting creosote and old soot in the chimney. Warm, humid mountain air drifts down a cool flue, picks up the odor of that damp buildup, and pushes it into your air-conditioned room. It's most common in open wood-burning fireplaces and usually means the chimney needs cleaning, a cap, or better draft control. A nuisance, rarely a danger.
Why summer is when you smell it
The smell is there year-round; summer is just when it reaches your nose. In winter, warm air rises up the flue and carries odor out.
