Why does the damper have to stay open with vented gas logs?

Because vented gas logs make real combustion byproducts — water vapor, a little soot, and some carbon monoxide — that have to leave up the chimney. With the damper open, that column of gases drafts safely outside. Close it and they spill back into the room. That's why we permanently clamp the damper open on every vented gas log install.

The safety reason, plain

A vented gas log set burns like a small campfire under your flue: a tall yellow flame that isn't fully complete combustion, so it gives off the same things a wood fire does, just less of them. Those byproducts — including carbon monoxide, which you can't see or smell — need an exit.

An open damper gives the warm gases a path straight up and out. A closed damper traps them at the ceiling and eventually in your lungs. There's no in-between with vented logs; the flue is part of the appliance.

That's also why they don't heat much

The open damper that keeps you safe is the same reason vented logs are ambiance, not a heater — the warm air rides out with the exhaust. It's a fair trade for the look, and it's why we're upfront that vented logs are decorative-first.

If you want the heat to stay in the room, that's a different product: vent-free logs, with their own rules, or a sealed direct-vent insert that vents through its own pipe and keeps the warmth.

How we lock it in

On every vented set we install, we fix the damper permanently open with a damper clamp so it can never be closed by accident on a running fire. We connect and pressure-test the gas line, confirm the flue drafts, and walk you through operation.

It's the kind of detail that separates a licensed hearth install from a log set dropped in loose. Questions about your fireplace? Call (828) 545-0525.
