Will a firewood pile near the house attract termites or other pests?
Yes — a woodpile stacked against the house is an open invitation to termites, carpenter ants, and mice, and it hands them a bridge straight to your framing. Keep the stack well away from the wall, up off the ground on a rack or pallets, and only bring a few logs indoors at a time. Distance and airflow are what protect the house.
What the pile actually draws in
Firewood is cellulose plus moisture — exactly what termites and carpenter ants are hunting for. Stack it touching the siding or a deck post and you've given them cover, food, and a short walk to your structural wood. Mice and the occasional snake will nest in a loose stack too. In WNC our damp summers keep an untended woodpile humid for weeks, which only makes it more attractive.
None of that means wood heat is a pest problem. It means the pile has to be positioned so the bugs stay in the pile, not the house.
How to break the bridge to your home
Set the stack away from the wall — twenty to thirty feet is ideal, and it should never touch the siding, a wood fence, or a deck. Get it up off bare dirt on a rack or pallets so the bottom row can breathe and dry instead of rotting into the ground. Keep it out of the mulch beds against the foundation, since that's already prime termite territory.
Bring wood in cold, burn it soon
Whatever you carry inside, keep it to a couple of logs at a time and burn it while it's still cold — don't let a big load sit indoors warming up.
