Will my gas fireplace work during a power outage?

Most gas fireplaces keep working through a power outage — but only if they use a millivolt (standing-pilot) or battery-backup ignition. A standing-pilot unit needs no electricity at all to make heat. Electronic-ignition models with no battery won't light until the power returns, and even on a millivolt unit the blower fan stops without house current.

It comes down to how yours lights

There are two ignition systems, and the difference decides everything in an outage. A millivolt, or standing-pilot, fireplace has a pilot flame that heats a thermopile, generating its own tiny electric current — enough to open the gas valve with zero wall power. Flip the switch or turn the knob and it lights, blackout or not. Electronic (intermittent) ignition instead relies on a spark drawn from house current; cut the power and it's dead, unless it carries a battery backup. Many modern units — Napoleon's line, for instance — include that battery backup for exactly this reason, so you keep heat when the grid drops. The catch: the blower needs power

Even on a millivolt unit, the fan that pushes warm air into the room runs on house current, so in an outage you lose forced circulation. You still get radiant heat off the glass and firebox — a direct-vent or radiant model heats a room fine with the fan idle — but the reach is shorter without the blower moving air.
