Wood-burning insert vs gas insert — which should I choose?

Around Candler, much of the area runs on propane, so a gas insert connects to your tank for switch-on heat, while a wood insert gives you cheaper, grid-independent warmth. Many newer Candler subdivisions came with basic decorative fireboxes that barely heat — either insert fixes that. In the Hominy Valley bowl, a clean-burning sealed unit is also easier on the air. Both seal a drafty firebox into a genuine heater.

From decorative firebox to real heat

Candler has grown fast, and a lot of the new subdivisions came with basic builder-grade fireboxes that are decorative first — they look like a fireplace but produce little usable heat. Owners tend to want a real upgrade within a few years, and that's where an insert comes in. A sealed gas or wood insert turns that opening into a genuine heater, commonly running far more efficient than the open box it replaces. Down in the Hominy Valley bowl, where cold air and woodsmoke can settle, a clean-burning EPA-certified sealed appliance is easier on the air than an open fire.

Propane, wood, and the license

Much of Candler is propane country rather than natural-gas mains, so a gas insert here runs off your tank, set up for LP with the right orifices and pressure. Plenty of these properties also have wood, and a wood insert is the cheapest heat per fire if you'll do the work. Either way, connecting gas is licensed work in North Carolina — a mason or landscaper legally can't — so we run the line, pull the Buncombe County permit, and pressure-test it. Both installs include a correctly sized stainless liner.
