Most gas log problems fall into a few buckets. Ignition trouble on a match-lit or manual set often means a fouled burner port, a bad safety pilot on the added valve, or a supply issue; on a set with electronic ignition or a remote, it's frequently dead receiver batteries, a failed igniter, or a weak thermopile. Logs that light but burn wrong — sooting, a lazy yellow flame, or uneven burn — usually trace back to log placement (vented logs must sit exactly to the manufacturer's pattern or they'll soot), a misadjusted air shutter, a partially clogged burner, or the set being configured for the wrong fuel. A set that won't stay lit points to the pilot or thermocouple on the valve. On ventless logs, the oxygen-depletion sensor (ODS) is a safety device that can shut the set down and sometimes needs cleaning or service.
