Are bioethanol or gel fuel fireplace fumes safe to breathe indoors?
Use caution. Bioethanol and gel-fuel fireplaces are ventless — they burn with no flue, so all of their combustion products go into the room: carbon dioxide, water vapor, some carbon monoxide, and trace irritants. Briefly, in a large well-ventilated space, a small burner is usually tolerable; in a small closed room they degrade air, cause headaches, and deplete oxygen. Refueling a hot unit is a flash-fire hazard.
Fumeless is marketing, not chemistry
These fireplaces are sold as clean, fumeless flame — no wood, no chimney, no smoke. The part they gloss over is that no chimney means no way out. Bioethanol and gel burn cleaner than wood, true, but they still combust: every hour of flame puts carbon dioxide and water vapor into the room, and if the flame is starved for air or the burner is oversized for the space, it also produces carbon monoxide and trace aldehydes. There's usually a faint alcohol odor at lighting, too. In a big, airy room used briefly it's minor; the illusion of no emissions is exactly that.
Where it turns risky
The danger scales with how small and closed the space is. A tight bedroom, a bathroom, a small den, or a well-sealed condo can see carbon dioxide climb, oxygen dip, and — the real worry — carbon monoxide accumulate, with headaches and stuffiness as the early warning. On top of the air question is a fire-safety one: the alcohol fuel is volatile, and pouring it into a burner that's still hot can cause a flash or flare-up that has injured people badly. Never refuel a warm unit, never use one in a bedroom or bathroom, and crack a window if you use one at all.
