Many Backgrounds. One Standard.
Clyde, North Carolina

Are fireplace rules different inside Asheville city limits versus unincorporated county areas?

In Clyde, the permit tracks your address the usual way: inside the small town's limits it's handled by Clyde, and out in unincorporated Haywood County it goes through the county. The code is the same at both. Clyde's dated 1960s-to-80s ranch fireplaces are prime insert candidates — and any insert's gas line or liner is permitted, inspected work.

Ranch-era fireboxes ready for an upgrade

Much of Clyde is 1960s-to-80s ranch-style housing, and the fireplaces built into those homes are dated — decorative, inefficient, and often past their prime. The satisfying fix is a sealed insert that turns a tired firebox into a genuine heater, which means a new gas line or a correctly sized liner. On top of that, Clyde shares the Pigeon valley's cold-air drainage and river humidity, which rusts dampers and degrades masonry chimneys faster than in drier spots — one more reason to seal and modernize. Every bit of that gas and venting work is licensed and permitted.

Small town, then the county

Clyde is a small incorporated town, so an in-limits address is permitted through the town while the surrounding rural areas are unincorporated Haywood County — the same county office that covers Canton and Waynesville's outskirts. The North Carolina code standard doesn't shift between them. Fuel is mixed here, natural gas in parts and propane in others, so the appliance setup depends on your street, but the permit and inspection are non-negotiable on either fuel.

One company, start to inspection

You shouldn't have to guess where the town line runs. As a licensed gas contractor we confirm jurisdiction, pull the Clyde or Haywood County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. Call (828) 545-0525 for a free in-home assessment, about 25 minutes west of our Asheville showroom.
