Are gas fire pits worth it compared to wood-burning fire pits?

In Asheville, yes for most homeowners — and headquartered right here on Emma Road, we install more gas fire pits than anywhere else we serve. Much of the city sits on natural-gas mains, so a pit can light at the turn of a key with no smoke, no ash, and no propane tank to refill.

Tapping the City's Gas Mains

Natural gas reaches much of Asheville, which changes the fire-pit math. Instead of swapping propane tanks, we run a buried, outdoor-rated line from the meter to the pit — permitted with Buncombe County and pressure-tested — so you get unlimited, refill-free fire on a permanent connection. Running or extending that line is licensed work in North Carolina; a hardscaper can set a beautiful stone surround, but only a licensed gas contractor can legally connect it to fuel.

That permanent line is the difference between a pit you light on a whim and one you keep meaning to refill. It becomes part of the patio, not a chore.

Tight Lots, Neighbors, and Smoke

In Montford, West Asheville, and Biltmore Village, houses sit close together and porches crowd the property line. Wood smoke drifts — onto a neighbor's screened porch, into the laundry on the line — and Asheville's still evenings hold it low. A gas flame gives you the fire without the plume, which matters more the closer your neighbors are.

Out in newer South Asheville construction, clean-faced gas pits suit modern patios and pair naturally with the same fuel already feeding the house.

When You Actually Want Wood

Some people want the real campfire — the pop, the smell, marshmallows over live coals. If that's you, a smokeless wood pit cuts the drift while keeping the ritual, and we install those too.

We'd rather match you to the fire you'll use than the priciest one. Call (828) 545-0525 and tell us how you picture your evenings.
