Round pits radiate in every direction, so everyone in the circle shares it. A heat deflector — a disk that sits over the flame — pushes more of that warmth out toward the seats instead of letting it climb straight up, which genuinely helps on the cooler nights.
Wind and Openness Are the Enemies
The more open and windy the spot, the more heat simply walks away. A pit tucked against a wall, or paired with a glass wind guard, holds its warmth noticeably better.
On a fully exposed ridge lot, even a big burner fights the mountain breeze. Elevation and our terrain matter here, so placement is half the battle — where you put the pit affects comfort as much as how many BTUs it makes.
