What is a heat deflector for a fire table and does it actually push more heat toward the seating?

How it works

Heat rises. On a low fire table, the flame sits well below the height of a seated person's body, so a lot of that warmth climbs straight past everyone and disappears into the night. A heat deflector — a disc of tempered glass held on short standoffs above the burner — catches that rising heat and radiates it back down and outward toward the ring of chairs.

It's a simple bit of physics, and on a table-height burner it makes a noticeable difference in how warm the seating actually feels.

When it's worth it

A deflector pays off most on cool, exposed patios — which describes a lot of WNC evenings — and on lower coffee- or dining-height tables where the flame is farthest from where warmth is wanted. Pair it with a glass wind guard and you both steady the flame and keep the heat from scattering.

Be realistic about what it does: it redirects heat you already have, it doesn't manufacture more. It won't turn a small burner into a furnace, but it clearly warms the people at the table.

Fit and safety

Not every table takes a deflector, and it has to match your burner size, use properly rated glass, and hold the correct clearance above the flame.
