Do I need a glass wind guard for my fire pit?

It keeps the flame steady in a breeze, shields the burner, and lets you actually enjoy the fire on a gusty mountain evening instead of watching it get blown flat. Round pits take a cylinder guard; linear pits take a rectangular one.
What a wind guard does for you
A wind guard is a clear tempered-glass wall that sits around the burner, tall enough to block cross-breezes but open at the top so the flame breathes. It steadies the fire so it stops flickering out, keeps stray gusts from scattering embers or bending the flame sideways, and protects the burner ports from wind-driven debris. It also holds a little warmth in the seating zone. And because it's clear, you lose none of the view of the fire — which is half the reason you put a pit in.
When you really want one — and when you can skip it
On an exposed patio, a ridge lot, or anywhere the wind swirls — which describes a lot of mountain properties — a wind guard turns a frustrating evening into a usable one. Linear and ribbon-flame burners especially benefit, since their long, low flame is easy for wind to disturb. If your pit lives in a genuinely sheltered courtyard, tucked behind the house or a solid wall, you may never need one. When in doubt, we'd rather you add it up front than fight the wind all season.
