Will my gas fire pit stay lit on a windy night?
A well-installed gas fire pit will hold its flame in a light breeze, but strong gusts can blow it around or snuff a match-lit burner outright. The reliable fixes are a glass wind guard around the flame, an electronic ignition that relights automatically, and smart placement out of the prevailing wind. On an exposed lot, plan for wind from day one.
What wind does to an open flame
A fire pit burner sits out in the open with a low, spread-out flame — exactly the shape wind pushes around most. A steady breeze bends and cools it; a sharp gust can lift it right off the ports and put it out. Match-lit pits are the most vulnerable, because once the flame's gone, it stays gone until someone relights it by hand. The bigger and more exposed the burner — a tall linear ribbon flame, say — the more surface the wind has to grab.
Three things that keep it burning
First, a glass wind guard — a cylinder for round pits, a rectangular frame for linear ones — walls off the flame while you still see it clearly. Second, electronic ignition: if a gust does blow the burner out, the system senses it and relights on its own, where a match-lit pit simply goes dark. Third, placement. Whenever the layout allows, we site the pit out of the prevailing wind — behind the house, a seat wall, or a windbreak of plantings that takes the edge off a gust before it reaches the fire.
Reading a mountain lot
