How do I pick a fire pit location on a windy or sloped lot?
On a windy or sloped lot, put the fire pit in a sheltered pocket — behind the house, a wall, or plantings that break the prevailing wind — on a level, well-drained pad, and hold the required clearances to the house, eaves, trees, and property line. On a slope, you build up or cut in a level base first.
Find the wind shadow
Before you love a spot for the view, watch how wind moves through it. WNC lots are rarely calm — ridges funnel gusts, valleys channel them, and tall trees create swirling downdrafts that change direction through the evening. The goal is a wind shadow: a pocket sheltered by the house, a garage wall, a seat wall, or a dense stand of plantings on the windward side. Site the pit there and it burns steady; put it on the exposed edge of a ridge and you'll fight the flame all night, glass guard or not.
Getting level on a slope
A fire pit — and especially a heavy built-in or fire table — needs a level, stable, well-drained base. On a slope, that means building the grade up on the low side or cutting into it on the high side to create a flat pad, usually with a compacted gravel base or a poured pad and proper drainage so water runs away from the pit, not into it. Don't set a pit on soft or pitched ground and hope; an unlevel burner burns unevenly and an unlevel table is a tipping and drainage headache.
Clearances that don't bend
Wind and grade are the comfort questions; clearances are the safety ones, and they aren't negotiable. Keep the pit well back from the house and any eaves or overhang, away from trees and low branches, and off the property line or fence per local rules.
