How do I pick a fire pit location on a windy or sloped lot?
In Arden, the fire-pit appeal often starts indoors — the 1980s-90s homes in Royal Pines and Skyland came with drafty open masonry fireplaces, and an outdoor pit adds a fresh gathering spot without touching them. Site it in a wind-sheltered pocket on a level, well-drained pad, with clearances to the house, trees, and property line.
A new gathering spot for established homes
Arden's established neighborhoods are full of tired open masonry fireplaces that pull more heat out of the room than they put in, and a lot of owners here would rather add outdoor fire than fight the old firebox. A fire pit does that cleanly — a real gathering space out back on lots that, being 1980s and '90s subdivisions, tend to have gentle, workable grades. There's usually an obvious sheltered pocket near the house or a fence line to use as the wind shadow. On these lots the view and the wind shadow don't always line up, which is worth sorting before the pad goes down.
Natural gas and the licensed line
Arden runs on the gas mains, so a buried, outdoor-rated line to the pit is straightforward — flame at the turn of a valve, no hauling wood, no cold-start smoke. Running that line is licensed gas work, though: a hardscaper can lay the patio, but in North Carolina only a licensed gas contractor can legally connect it. We pull the Buncombe County permit, pressure-test the line, and meet the inspector. The same holds for outdoor features at the Biltmore Park retail and office spaces nearby.
Level base, real clearances
Even on Arden's gentle grades a pit wants a level, well-drained pad so the burner sits true and water runs off; on any real slope we bench it flat first. Clearances hold regardless — back from the house and eaves, clear of trees and overhang, off the lot line, manufacturer's numbers layered on. We're 15 minutes south.
