How do I pick a fire pit location on a windy or sloped lot?
In Black Mountain, the Swannanoa Valley's temperature inversions change how you site a pit — cold, damp air and smoke settle into low pockets on still nights, so don't tuck the pit in the lowest dip of the yard. Pick a spot sheltered from wind but not sunk in a cold sink, on a level, well-drained pad, with clearances to the house, trees, and lot line.
Cold air pools — and so does smoke
Black Mountain's mornings run 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville's because the valley traps and pools cold air, and that same pooling works against a fire pit set in the lowest hollow of the lot: the cold air pins the smoke down and the warmth never quite lifts to where you're sitting. Aim for a spot that's sheltered from the prevailing wind yet slightly off the very bottom of the grade, so smoke drifts and drains instead of hanging. It's a subtle call, and it's exactly the kind of thing worth walking the lot to judge.
Wooded lots and downdraft
Up toward Montreat and Ridgecrest the lots are heavily wooded and shaded, which keeps them cool and damp and sends the wind swirling in downdrafts off the ridge rather than in one clean direction. A pit there wants genuine shelter — the house, a seat wall, a dense stand of trees on the windward side — plus real clearance from low branches and overhanging limbs. Black Mountain runs on the natural-gas mains, so we can trench a buried, outdoor-rated line to the pit; that's licensed work, and we pull the Buncombe County permit and meet the inspector.
A flat, dry base and a short drive
The wet, shaded ground here makes a well-drained pad matter — compacted gravel or a poured base pitched to carry water away keeps the pit level and the burner even.
