How do I pick a fire pit location on a windy or sloped lot?
In Marshall, slope is the whole conversation — these are some of the steepest, tightest lots we work, built against the mountainside above the French Broad. A fire pit needs a genuine level bench cut or built into the grade, sheltered from gorge wind, on a well-drained base, with clearances to the house, trees, and property line held on the pitch.
Benching a steep lot
Marshall's hillside lots don't offer a flat spot — you make one. On a real pitch we bench the grade, cutting into the uphill side and shoring the downhill, to carve a stable, compacted pad big enough for the pit and the seating around it, with drainage engineered so water runs across and away rather than undermining the bench. Access is often tight here, built as these lots are against the mountain, so the siting has to account for how we even get material to the spot. This is not a set-it-on-the-grass job; on this kind of slope the base is most of the work.
Gorge wind and fuel
The French Broad gorge channels wind through Marshall in gusts that swirl rather than blow one way, so a pit wants shelter from the house or the uphill bank on the windward side, not an exposed edge with the view. The town runs mixed on gas and propane; a gas pit needs a buried, outdoor-rated line, which is licensed work — we run it or set the propane piping, permit it with the county, and pressure-test before it lights. A mason can build the surround; only a licensed gas contractor can legally connect the fuel.
Clearances on tight ground
Tight mountainside lots make clearances harder, not optional — the pit still has to sit well back from the house and eaves, clear of trees and overhang, and off the property line, with manufacturer's numbers on top.
