Height comes down to how you'll use it. Ground-level or bowl-height pits feel campfire-casual and disappear into a patio; coffee-table height (roughly 18-24 inches) is the crowd favorite — it pairs with lounge seating, keeps flame at eye level, and hides a propane tank; dining height (about 28-36 inches) suits bar stools and standing gatherings.
The three heights, and who each one suits
Ground-level and bowl-height pits — roughly 12 to 16 inches — read campfire-casual. You gather around them the way you'd sit around embers, and they visually sink into a patio or a bed of gravel. Coffee-table height, around 18 to 24 inches, is where most of our Asheville and Hendersonville customers land: it lines up with lounge chairs and outdoor sofas, puts the flame at relaxed eye level, and gives you a rim to set a drink or a plate. Dining height, roughly 28 to 36 inches, is the move when the crowd mingles standing or perched on bar stools — a fire table on a deck where people circulate rather than sink in.
What the height is really hiding
There's a practical reason table and dining heights win with gas: the taller the enclosure, the more room underneath to conceal a propane tank, a gas key valve, and the burner's air gap. A ground-level pit looks clean but leaves you fewer places to tuck a 20-pound tank or route a buried line — which is why, out in Fairview and Candler propane country, we often steer folks toward a taller build. If you're on a natural-gas main in south Asheville, height matters less for the fuel and more for how you like to sit.
Match the height to the furniture, not the reverse
The mistake we see is picking a height in the abstract. Bring us the seating you actually own or want, or come sit with it in the showroom.
