How much space should there be between the fire pit and the seating?
Plan on about 2 to 3 feet of open space between the edge of the fire pit and the front of your seats — enough that legs and feet stay comfortable, no one's knees are in the heat, and people can walk behind the chairs. That gap plus the seating depth is why fire pit areas need more room than folks expect.
The comfortable gap
Two to three feet from the fire pit edge to the front of the seat is the sweet spot for most gas and wood pits. Closer than that and it's too warm on your shins, hard to get in and out, and cramped for feet and drinks; much farther and you lose the warmth and intimacy that make a fire pit worth having. Taller or higher-BTU pits, and open wood fires that throw more radiant heat, want the space nearer three feet; a modest gas fire table can sit closer to two.
Don't forget the walkway
The number people forget is circulation. Behind the ring of chairs you want another 3 feet or so of clear space so guests can walk around the seating without squeezing past the fire. Add it up: the pit's own diameter, plus about 2 to 3 feet of gap on every side, plus the depth of the chairs, plus a walkway behind them. A 40-inch fire pit with chairs around it easily needs a 12-to-14-foot-diameter clear zone. That's why patios that looked plenty big on paper feel tight once the fire feature and furniture go in.
Match it to the pit and the patio
The right gap depends on the pit you choose and the space you have, so it's worth planning the two together rather than buying a pit and hoping it fits. A lower fire table reads differently than a tall bowl; a linear feature changes how seating wraps around it.
