Are outdoor gas log sets sized or rated differently from indoor sets?
Yes. Outdoor gas log sets are built and rated for open-air use, which changes both the hardware and the sizing math. They're made of weather-resistant materials, they're almost always open-burner style, and because outdoor air steals heat fast, they carry much higher BTU ratings than an indoor set of the same physical log size. You can't safely swap an indoor set outdoors, or vice versa.
Different job, different build
An indoor gas log set lives in a sheltered firebox and vents (or, for ventless, is strictly room-size limited). An outdoor set lives in the weather — rain, humidity, pollen, freeze-thaw — so the burners, valves, and log castings are made from corrosion-resistant materials rated for exterior exposure.
Just as important, outdoor sets are listed and certified specifically for outdoor installation. An indoor-listed set used outside isn't covered for that use and won't hold up; an outdoor set brought inside can't meet indoor venting and room-size rules. The listing on the box tells you where it's allowed to go, and that's not a suggestion.
Why the BTU numbers look bigger outside
Outdoors, there are no walls to hold heat and a constant breeze carrying it away, so an outdoor log set or burner is rated much higher than an indoor set of the same nominal log length to produce any felt warmth. A 24-inch indoor set and a 24-inch outdoor set can be worlds apart in BTU.

Getting the fuel and install right
Outdoor sets run on natural gas or propane just like indoor ones, but the fuel line is a different animal — outdoor-rated pipe buried to code, sized for the higher BTU load, permitted and pressure-tested — licensed work that's squarely our lane. On propane out in Fairview, Candler, or the cabins, we confirm the tank and regulator can carry the added demand.
