Gas outdoor fireplaces, fire pits, and patio heaters all carry a BTU rating — Napoleon's Uptown pit, for instance, is a 60,000-BTU LP burner — so in that sense, yes, there's a number on the box. But read it for what it is: a measure of fuel burned and flame produced, not a promise of how warm your patio will get.

Indoors, a 'heats up to X square feet' figure works because four walls and a ceiling trap the heat. Open a patio to the mountain air and there's nothing to hold it, so that square-footage rating simply doesn't translate outside.

It's radiant heat, and line-of-sight rules

Outdoors you feel heat the way you feel the sun — radiantly, in a straight line from the flame to your skin. Sit inside the fire's throw and you'll be warm; step behind a chair back or out of its sight line and the warmth drops off fast.

A higher-BTU burner widens that warm arc and pushes it a little farther, which is why bigger fire features genuinely do heat more people — but 'more' is about reach and radiant intensity, not degrees on a thermometer.
