The state's air-quality action days are a voluntary skip: on those, going without a wood fire keeps particulate out of the cold, still air that settles in these valleys. Out in the valleys, a propane connection is licensed work — regulator, piping, and pressures all have to be correct, and a wrong-fuel setup soots the appliance.
