Are vent-free (ventless) gas appliances legal in North Carolina?
Yes — vent-free gas appliances are legal in Fairview under the state fuel gas code, and we install them across Buncombe County. On these wooded rural lots where wood heat is a way of life and propane is the common fuel, vent-free gas offers a cleaner-handling supplemental option — no creosote, no hauling — but with moisture and room rules wood heat doesn't have.
Cleaner than wood, with different trade-offs
Fairview's wooded lots make wood heat natural, and the downside every fall is creosote — the leading cause of chimney fires when a flue goes unswept. A vent-free propane log set sidesteps creosote entirely and keeps nearly all its heat in the room. The trade-off is moisture: burning gas with no flue puts water vapor back into the room, so we size to the space and don't oversize. Propane also needs its own LP orifices and pressure to burn clean.
The limits, plainly
Vent-free is prohibited in bedrooms and bathrooms except under narrow conditions, and each unit is rated to a minimum room size — bigger isn't better. Every listed appliance carries an ODS oxygen sensor that cuts the gas if room oxygen drops. On damp, wooded Cane Creek and Garren Creek properties, we'll often suggest sealed direct-vent when a home is tight or someone's sensitive to humidity.
Licensed propane, permitted
