Are ventless gas logs allowed in a bathroom?

Vent-free gas logs are legal in North Carolina in the right rooms, but bathrooms and bedrooms are the classic exclusions written into the codes and the manufacturers' own instructions. The logic is simple: a ventless set keeps its combustion products in the room by design, and those two rooms are the smallest, most enclosed, most-occupied-while-vulnerable spaces in a home. An oxygen-depletion sensor helps, but it doesn't make a bathroom an appropriate place for the appliance.

Why the room fights the appliance

Even setting the code aside, the physics work against you. Ventless combustion releases water vapor — a real amount of it — into the room. A bathroom already runs humid from showers, so adding a ventless burner means fogged mirrors, condensation on cold surfaces, and, over time, moisture where you don't want it. That's the same moisture tradeoff we warn every ventless customer about, and a bathroom is where it bites hardest.

Two things that actually work here

For fire in a bathroom, go electric — no combustion, no fumes, no venting, just pick a unit listed for a damp location, like the Dimplex we carry. Or install a sealed direct-vent gas fireplace, which is cleared for bathrooms because its air and exhaust stay outside the room entirely.
