Small bodies feel it first
Ventless gas fireplaces are generally safe when they're correctly sized for the room, professionally installed, maintained, and used within the rules — but pets change the math. A cat or a small dog has a fraction of your body mass and breathes faster, so the moisture, trace combustion byproducts, and oxygen draw a vent-free unit puts into the room reach them sooner than they reach you. The oxygen-depletion sensor (ODS) that shuts the unit off responds to the room's overall oxygen level with a healthy adult in mind — it isn't gauging what a small, fast-breathing animal down at floor level is actually taking in.
The rules that matter more with pets
Everything the vent-free rulebook says goes double in a pet home: size the unit to the room, never run it in a small or closed space, never in a bedroom the pet sleeps in behind a shut door, keep it maintained, and don't run it for hours on end. Ventless also adds real humidity to the air — fine for dry winter days, a problem if it's fogging your windows. And birds are a separate, stricter case entirely; their respiratory systems are extraordinarily sensitive, and we don't recommend vent-free anywhere near them.
