Building a new home — should we frame for a direct-vent gas fireplace or a wood-burning fireplace with a chimney?
In Black Mountain, natural gas reaches much of town, and the Swannanoa Valley's ridges and tall trees are a reason to favor sealed direct-vent gas: downdrafts that stall an open wood chimney don't touch a sealed unit. Frame for wood if you want a real off-grid fire — just plan the chimney height for the terrain.
Ridges, tall trees, and downdraft
The valley's temperature inversions leave mornings 10–15 degrees colder than Asheville, and the same terrain — steep ridges, heavy tree cover around Montreat — is what causes downdrafts in open chimneys. A wood-burning fireplace can absolutely work here, but the Class A chimney has to be tall enough to clear the draft-killing turbulence, planned carefully at framing. A sealed direct-vent gas unit doesn't care about wind or downdraft: combustion is sealed, and the coaxial vent pulls its own air. On a wooded, shaded Black Mountain lot, that's one less variable to fight.
Sealed combustion, or a wood fire you own
If you want warmth at the flip of a switch, direct-vent gas is the low-drama choice, and battery-backup ignition keeps it running when the grid drops. If independence matters more, frame the chase for wood — you'll get heat that owes nothing to the power company, and the chase can still take gas later if you change your mind. The reverse never works: a gas-only opening won't accept a chimney once the room's finished. In this valley the fireplace runs a long shoulder season, so pick the appliance you'll want lighting on a cold April night, not just in January. Decide while the framers are on site.
