Building a new home — should we frame for a direct-vent gas fireplace or a wood-burning fireplace with a chimney?
For a Clyde build, Haywood County permitting and the humid valley shape the call. River humidity rusts dampers and degrades masonry flues fast here, so an open wood chimney is a maintenance commitment; a sealed direct-vent gas unit avoids the open flue entirely. Frame the chase for wood only if you'll burn it — that option can't be added cheaply later.
The humid-valley flue problem
Clyde shares the cold-air drainage and river humidity of neighboring Canton and Waynesville, and that damp air is rough on hearths — it rusts dampers and degrades masonry chimneys faster than drier towns. A wood-burning fireplace means an open flue living in that moisture, needing regular attention and eventual relining. A sealed direct-vent gas unit has no open chimney to weather — combustion is sealed and it vents out a sidewall. If you do want wood, we frame the chase and spec a stainless liner and cap built to shrug off the damp.

Clyde's housing leans to 1960s–80s ranch builds with dated fireplaces that were never strong heaters — exactly the kind we're often asked to upgrade with inserts. Building new, you can start with a real appliance instead. The framing rule decides the rest: a wood-ready chase keeps wood, gas logs, and a sealed insert all possible, while a gas-only opening is gas for the life of the house. Parts of the area are on the gas main and parts run propane; where it's propane, we coordinate the tank and set the unit for LP. Either fuel works with the right setup.
Permitted and inspected in Haywood County
Gas piping is licensed work no builder or mason can legally connect. We coordinate with your builder at rough-in, run and pressure-test the line, pull the Haywood County permit, and meet the inspector.
