Can a fireplace be installed under a staircase?
Yes, a fireplace can go under a staircase — it's a striking look — but the appliance choice matters. An electric or sealed direct-vent gas unit is usually the right call, because both run cool-bodied and vent in ways that fit tight, framed spaces. The staircase and any storage around it have to honor the manufacturer's clearances to combustibles.
The Space Dictates the Appliance
Under-stair nooks are tight, enclosed, and wrapped in combustible framing and finishes, which rules some options in and out fast. A wood-burning fireplace needs a chimney and serious clearances, so it's almost never practical there. A direct-vent gas fireplace, sealed and vented out a nearby sidewall, works well because it needs no chimney and its clearances are known and tight. An electric unit — like the Dimplex linear we carry — is the simplest of all: no venting, no gas, just a receptacle, and it can sit in a shallow recess. Clearances Don't Bend
Whatever goes in, the manufacturer's clearance table governs — the required air gaps to framing, the mantel height, and what finish materials can sit next to the opening. The underside of the stairs counts as a combustible, so it has to sit at or above the specified clearance, and any under-stair storage or drywall has to respect the same rules. This is exactly where a listed heat-management approach and correct framing earn their keep. Cut corners here and you've built a fire hazard into the bones of the house.
Getting It Framed Right
