Can a fireplace make radon levels in my house worse?

Wood heat and radon travel together

The more house air a fireplace sends up the flue, the more soil gas it pulls in to replace it, and open wood fires are the biggest movers there are. In Leicester's rural valleys, where wood heat is common and some homes don't have the electrical capacity for much else, the appliance heating the house is also the one pulling hardest on the ground. Cold-air drainage runs these hollows 5 to 8 degrees colder than Asheville, so those fires burn long and pull steadily all season.

A crawl space or bare-earth foundation under these older homes gives that soil gas an open door.

Keep the wood, or seal it up

There's a fair case for keeping wood out here — it's grid-independent heat when the power's out, which matters on roads that get restored last. If you keep it, test the home and know your radon number.
