Radon draw scales with how much house air a fireplace sends up the flue, and an open wood fire is the champion at that — hundreds of cubic feet a minute. A lot of rural Mars Hill homes heat with wood by necessity, so the appliance doing the most heating is also the one pulling hardest on the ground. A wood stove moves less than an open fireplace, and a sealed gas unit less still, so the appliance choice is the whole game here.

Propane sealed gas is the gentle alternative

If you want to keep wood for its off-grid heat, that's a fair trade-off, but test the home and know the number, because Mars Hill's colder climate means long burning seasons and long exposure.
