The burner itself has to change to accept natural gas. Its propane orifices are too small to pass the volume natural gas needs, so we install the manufacturer's conversion kit or re-jet it, then tune the flame so it burns clean rather than sooty. A few pits aren't built to convert — we'll tell you straight if yours is one of them and a new listed burner is the smarter money.

The line, the clay, and the permit

Feeding the pit means burying an outdoor-rated line from the house, and Henderson County's clay-heavy soil — the same soil that settles foundations and stresses older masonry chimneys around here — has to be trenched and backfilled properly so nothing shifts under load.
