Can a sealed-off or decommissioned fireplace in an older home be brought back into service?

When one of these gets sealed off, the usual culprit is a chronic draft that pulled cold air into the room or a clay liner that started cracking with age. Preserving the character of these houses matters, so the goal is never to gut the fireplace — it's to make the original opening safe and usable again.
What the camera looks for
A Level 2 inspection runs a camera the full height of the flue to read the clay liner, the masonry, the firebox, and the clearances — and on a house this old, the liner condition usually decides the job. If it's intact, revival is modest: a sweep, a properly sized liner, a working damper, and a safety check. If the tiles are cracked or the flue was never lined to modern standards, relining comes first. Henderson County permits the work and an inspector signs it off.
Fixing the draft without losing the look
Flat Rock runs on natural-gas mains, and for many of these oversized old fireboxes the sealed gas insert is the revival that solves everything at once. Dropped into the historic opening with its own liner, it ends the cold-air draft that got the fireplace closed in the first place, heats far more efficiently than the open box ever could, and on battery-backup ignition keeps the room warm during an outage.
