Does my chimney need to be inspected or cleaned before a conversion or insert installation?

Yes — every conversion or insert install starts with a chimney inspection, and usually a sweep. Before we set a sealed insert and its liner, or send a gas-log conversion up the existing flue, we have to confirm that flue is sound and sized right. Decades of creosote, cracked flue tiles, or a crumbling crown all change the plan, so we look first, every time.

Why we look before we install

A sealed gas insert doesn't just sit in the old opening — it vents through a correctly sized stainless liner run to the top of the chimney, and that liner has to pass through masonry we can trust. A vented gas-log conversion works differently: it keeps using the existing flue with the damper open, so that flue has to be sound and clear on its own. Either way, if the structure is compromised, the appliance won't draft properly and combustion byproducts don't have a safe path out.

We see this weekly in older Asheville homes. A fireplace that burned wood fine for forty years can still hide cracked tiles, a spalling crown, or gaps from settling. None of it shows from the hearth. That's why the inspection comes first — it's cheaper to know now than to discover it after the appliance is set.

What we're checking for

A Level 1 or Level 2 inspection covers the flue's condition top to bottom: creosote buildup from years of wood fires, cracked or missing flue tiles, the crown and cap, and how well the existing liner — if there is one — is holding up. If the chimney's been sitting unused, we're also looking for animal nests and blockages, which are common up here.

Heavy creosote gets swept before any conversion work, both for a clean install and because we don't want that fuel load in a chimney that'll now carry a liner.

How it shapes your quote

If the flue is sound, the inspection is quick and the conversion moves ahead as planned. If we find real damage, we'll walk you through it honestly — sometimes it means relining, sometimes a crown repair, and that adds cost and a day or two. We quote it upfront before any work begins, no mystery charges. Call (828) 545-0525 to schedule a free in-home assessment.
