Multi-sided gas fireplaces — three-sided peninsula units that jut into a room, and bay-style units with angled glass — are made by several major hearth brands, and we install them regularly. They do need purpose-built framing and, because more glass means more exposed heat, careful clearance planning. Venting is standard direct-vent, but the routing takes more thought.
Multi-Sided Is a Real Category
These aren't custom hacks — manufacturers build dedicated multi-sided models. A three-sided peninsula fireplace shows flame from three faces as it projects into a room; a two-sided see-through passes between two rooms; a bay unit angles the glass forward. Because they're purpose-built appliances, each has its own listing, its own rough-opening dimensions, and its own clearance table. Framing Is the Real Work
More open faces means more glass, and glass radiates heat, so clearances to nearby walls, mantels, and finishes are tighter and more particular than a standard front-facing box. The rough opening has to be framed to the manufacturer's exact dimensions — a multi-sided unit isn't sliding into a generic hole. Because glass surrounds it on multiple sides, there's less framed wall to hide finishes and a TV, and heat-management planning matters more. This is precise carpentry, and getting it right up front is far easier than fixing clearance mistakes later.
Venting Still Comes Standard
The good news on venting: these are direct-vent appliances, sealed and coaxial, so they don't need a chimney. The catch is that a unit open on three sides has less solid wall behind it to run the pipe through, so the vent route — up through a chase, out a sidewall, or around framing — takes more planning.
