The Swannanoa Valley traps cold air overnight, so Black Mountain mornings routinely run 10 to 15 degrees colder than Asheville and frost lingers later into spring. A wood stove answers that beautifully — it's radiant heat that warms the room it stands in hard and holds through a long, cold night without a thermostat cycling a furnace. The catch is distribution. In a modern open home near downtown, one stove can carry the main level. Up in Montreat, where houses sit under heavy tree cover and are often divided into smaller rooms, that heat won't reach the back of the house on its own.
