Restore the draft, keep the character
We inspect the flue and crown, clear the nest or debris, check the liner condition, and fit a screened cap sized to the chimney — then test-fire to confirm it draws the way an old open hearth should. If an insert is the better long-term answer, we handle the correctly sized liner and, on a gas conversion, the licensed fuel line. On a chimney this old, we also check whether the clay liner has cracked with age, since a compromised liner and a missing cap tend to go together.
